Limerick Physiotherapy Clinic has been in practice for 20 years dealing with rugby, gaelic and soccer players as well as participants of all other sports. Two of the three physiotherapists are sports masters and we had been looking at cryotherapy as a treatment modality to replace simple ice-packs and bags. We narrowed the choice down to two types and tried both out. Zamar came out on top with nothing near it to compete. Ice units are not in the same league as this unit. The machine will achieve any temperature setting you give it and the limb that is wrapped will hit that precise temperature also.

The effects are like nothing that we have seen before. Patients feel not just cold but distinct changes taking place within the injured tissue as it is being treated. You have to understand that the area being treated cools or heats to exactly the set temperature on the machine and this is interesting because it will heat a joint to 40 degrees perfectly, safely and with no risk of burning. Even short-wave can't do that and patients with arthrotoc joints find the warmth and pressure very effective.

This concept is not new but the delivery is very new and exciting. We are learning as we use it and develop new protocols every week as well as new ways of applying treatment along with Zamar. We started with the portable unit (every club should own one) but we aspire to the clinical unit which has the power to treat several patients at once. We look forward to seeing the research appear in the coming years – it is exciting.
